Spring is officially here! This means there are new trends and styles popping up within designer collections, fashion magazines and all your favorite department stores. In March, I participated in a week long Instagram challenge created by @annazzon and @imanorbyah. The challenge was to find spring trends in “your own closet” rather than outside of it. I loved this idea because it saved me money! I mean, come on! I did not buy new clothes after all. I ended up having a lot of fun shopping from within my own closet while rediscovering items that I forgot I even had. Scroll through all my spring trend looks below and let me know what spring trend you’re looking forward to trying out this season!
1. Vests
Vests are a HUGE trend this spring. We saw them on the runways from Rag & Bone, Celine, Marc Jacobs, Gucci and more! I wasn’t sure how I felt about this trend; I haven’t always loved vests, but they do define the waist well and can bring about a cohesive look. My closet doesn’t support this trend well, but I do have this cool, vintage 1970’s knit vest! I had to go to California for work meetings so I needed to make this trend work for the office gal on the go. Adding a blazer, undershirt, black jeans and my on brand Fluff Yeah slides from UGG made it work appropriate yet fun. I think it came together well and now I’m looking to add more vests to my closet. Who’d a thunk that?!
2. Neon
Another great spring trend are the use of neon colors. I am all in on these high colors so naturally I love this trend. I really wanted to wear this Chinti and Parker geometric printed dress that I bought at a Rent the Runway sale in Chicago last year and wanted to make it work with neon hues. If I’m going to wear a bunch of color: I’m going ALL out! Geometric prints are another trend (they usually are), and this combined with bright colors made it the perfect choice for the spring season. If you’re still unsure about all things neon and looking for some designer inspiration check out the recent runways from Balenciaga, Valentino, Christopher John Rogers and Jacquemus.
3. Colored Leather and Polka Dots
I had to dig into the depths of my storage unit for this one: the colored leather trend. I have an amazing 1980’s classic blue (which is the Pantone color of the year btw) leather set and it is perfect for spring. The set is a little big on me which is why it was in storage, but the jacket could work over-sized. Polka dots are also a big trend for spring so I pulled this 70’s top from my closet. The pants came from a stash of men’s trousers I found at the thrift store, actually. The belt and earrings came from Goodwill. This whole outfit was thrifted! Designers that incorporated colorful and spring leather into their collections were Coach 1941, Bottega Veneta, Alexander McQueen and Sally LaPointe among others!
4. 60’s Wallpaper Prints
I actually have quite a bit of funky 1960’s printed dresses that are perfect for this trend. They are busy and crazy and sooo 60’s that I can’t pass them up when I see them in a store. These prints are a bit harder to wear in the modern age. You may see people giving you a few odd looks but for spring 2020…you will be right on trend. Just ignore them and keep on trendin’! Just tell them you got your inspiration from Prada, Marc Jacobs, Fendi, Etro or Christopher Kane runways and they’ll back off for sure!!
5. Tiered Dresses
It is actually on my spring to do list to make one of these dresses. I am thinking of sewing up some white cotton and dyeing the tiers, making them color blocked for a big statement. Until then though I will share with ya’ll the best tiered dress in my closet! It is from the 60’s and could actually serve as wallpaper, too! There were several designers’ collections that represented this trend well, but my favorite was Alexander McQueen. Sarah Burton has done it again, and I (of course) feel inspired by every look on her runway.
6. Dagger Collars
Another key item in my closet are 1970’s shirts that yep, have dagger collars. I freaking love them! They are incredibly unique and just scream vintage! Several designers took inspiration from the 70’s and created their own over-sized collars, putting them on tops, jackets, and even dresses. Simply look towards Ferragamo, JW Anderson, Saint Laurent, Lanvin and Victoria Beckham for examples of exquisite inspiration. Mine below is a great spring take with my floral T-Shirt complete with an authentic 1970’s dagger collar.
7. Denim
When is denim not a trend?!? Denim is incredibly universal. Starting as a utilitarian fabric for hard laborers then trickling up and out to the masses, denim has remained an everyday staple in everyone’s closet (or should be). It is easy to style and comes in a wide variety of options. Here, I represent the trend in a denim skirt from the Gap. I paired it with a vintage floral shirt from the 70’s and my Koolaburra by UGG slides. For a designer take on denim for Spring 2020 check out Celine!
You will likely notice that several of the designers called out do a little bit of everything and dabble in all these trends. Other trends for spring are: bermuda shorts, crochet, eyelet and quilted fabrics, tropical prints, trench coats, suiting, cut outs and bra tops. Which ones are you shopping and wearing during these warmer months? Let me know in the comments!
